Forbes named South Lake Tahoe one of 33 "cheapest" places to travel in 2018!

Where: South Lake Tahoe
Chosen By: Michaela Guzy, an American media executive, entrepreneur and on-air show host. She is the executive producer for two online television shows, Michaela’s Map and OhThePeopleYouMeet. Based in New York City, she is also an adjunct professor at New York University School of Professional Studies, where she teaches a course called "Travel Storytelling: Creating Video Content."
Why: Did you know that Lake Tahoe is one of the oldest, tallest, largest, deepest and purest lakes in the world? The southern shore of the lake, known as South Tahoe, straddles two states and is known to be the livelier shore. There is a booming craft beer scene, and they even have a beer map for visitors. Some standouts are locally owned Lake Tahoe Ale Worx and the Cold Water Brewery. Not too sure what’s in the water out there, but the southern shores of Lake Tahoe also produces world-renowned athletes. South Tahoe is home to a couple of Winter Olympian Gold Medalists and several 2018 Olympic hopefuls. (Check out my interview with Hannah Tetter, Maddie Bowman and Kyle Smaine, who all train on Sierra, the “locals” mountain.) In October 2017, an 11-foot bronze sculpture by artist, Gareth Curtiss, was unveiled at Champions Plaza called the “Spirit of Competition," inspired by local Olympic athletes. Heavenly is a mountain that's great for families. The resort has a village with shops and outdoor fire pits. Check out dinner and magic show at The Loft, and for the best sunset views (and steaks) in South Tahoe, go to Friday’s Station. Stay at the Lake Tahoe Resort at Heavenly, where rates start at just $109 and its location in the middle of the village means you can walk right to the gondola — nice when lugging skis or a snowboard. But South Tahoe isn’t all about the powder; in fact over two-thirds of tourist arrivals are in the spring and summer months for hiking, biking and golf. Wildlife lovers won't want to miss a visit to meet Emma, an American bald eagle rescued by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

What's it like to participate in SnowFest!'s "coolest" event?

2/10/2017

Courtesy of Steven Munatones, Founder of Openwaterswimming.com, this article features a rather humorous interview with Dr. Jeff Hartman. Hartman is a long-time friend of Gar Woods Grill & Pier who has rallied numerous swimmers for the Annual Gar Woods Polar Bear Swim year after year. We are hoping to see Dr. Hartman return for this year's Polar Bear Swim on Saturday, March 4th, 2017.

Thinking about swimming in this year's Polar Bear Swim? This is what Dr. Jeff has to say about participating in this "cool" annual event.

Dr. Jeffrey Hartman will participate once again at the 250-yard Gar Woods Grill & Pier Polar Bear Swim in Lake Tahoe.

Dr. Hartman explained his dip in the high-altitude swim at the Gar Woods Grill & Pier. "I am purely recreational and do it for fun. I'm not in any way, shape or form a competitive swimmer. Gar Woods has a prize with cash for the fastest swimmer and a prize, which is a free drink coin for the person, who stays in the water the longest. I am the 10-year reigning champion – you can probably guess which one I win.

I am a poor athlete and always have been. For that reason, I gravitated to distance running because I performed so badly at all the more glamorous sports. As my hideous form gave me numerous running injuries, at the age of 26 I jumped back into the pool to try to get some sort of exercise during times in which I had stress fractures.

My last adventure in swimming had me feeling advanced 5 yarders in the infamous blue bunny swimming program circa 1970s. At the time, I was at least five years older than all the other participants and I refused to go back into the pool. To this day, I refuse to put my face in the water and swim a modified dog paddle."

The local emergency medicine doctor's enthusiasm knows few bounds
. "In some years, I am able to recruit some friends the night prior to the Polar Bear Swim where we jump off the dock outside the bar at Gar Woods in an unsanctioned polar bear practice. Let it be known this is in no way encouraged, and in fact strongly discouraged, by the staff at Gar Woods."

And he humorously explains his acclimatization process. "I occasionally swim as a form of cross training in my modified dog paddle style. The pure inefficiency of my stroke makes it good exercise as I flail about. I imagine I look a lot like a lizard running if you stuck them in water.

There is no acclimatizing to 40°F water. Honestly, I prefer a stiff drink before I participate, though again this is strongly discouraged by the staff of Gar Woods. Some people wear wetsuits and others grease up with Crisco, but [they should be] prepared to be booed if you wear a wetsuit."

The doctor's secret of success? "My secret is to put duct tape over my Speedo. There are two parts of your body that really don't appreciate the sudden cold: your chest as one of them and you might guess the others where I put the duct tape. The duct tape is not waterproof, but it lets the water in very slowly so you don't get that shock that takes your breath away. You are number for a good time after so taking off the duct tape doesn't really hurt. Duct tape also works great to put on your feet as there are a lot of rocks that you have to walk across.

Stepping into the water is moderately unpleasant at best, but for someone like me who has never been cheered at any athletic event it is well worth it. The energy is really a lot of fun."

While swimming - for 250 yards or any distance - in sub-40°F water seems like a reason to back out or be scared, the good doctor describes the safety procedures of the annual event. "I have never felt that it was unsafe and I have never really been scared. The county boats are out there with a Jet Ski to help anyone who appears to get in trouble. The mild hypothermia actually gives you quite a pleasant little euphoria."

Dr. Hartman explains his post-race rewarming procedures. "It can take a while to warm up. About five or six years ago, they started having hot tubs outside to warm up. This has been fantastic.

The problem with me, is that the duct tape needs to be taken off before you can get in. And that can be kind of a production as it needs to be done in private lest things fall out. And when 40 other hypothermic people get into the hot tub, it really isn't that warm anymore.

I generally dry off, get into thermals and a polar bear suit, followed by my parka. I then proceed to take all the free hugs available, and there are plenty, and sip on a pleasant little warm tequila concoction that the bar makes
."

Why does he do it year in and year out? "This is all about the fun. If someone is a truly competitive swimmer they will probably not be overwhelmed by this. Certainly, it is more than your typical polar bear plunge where you step in, dip your fanny and get out. The atmosphere surrounding the event and the party afterwards and the general positive attitude is great fun.

I hope there is some crazy fool who sees fit to take over my reign as the last man in. I'm getting too old for this."

Carnelian Bay, CA August 12, 2015 – Home of the “Wet Woody”, Gar Woods Grill & Pier and The Monte Foundation will be hosting their 4th Annual “Fireworks Spectacular” on Sunday, September 4th at 8:30pm. You are invited to sit front row on the action and watch the Labor Day Weekend sky light up just off Gar Woods pier. Many have said this is the best fireworks show they’ve ever seen, so don’t miss out!

The lakefront fireworks show will not only pay homage to the social and economic achievement of workers but will also benefit North Tahoe-Truckee Area Sports Programs. In the last three years this event has raised over $70,000 that went directly to funding local sports programs and they are out to break a record this year.

In addition to the money Gar Woods donates from the evening, High School athletes will be selling event T-shirts and glow sticks on the beach that will contribute to the proceeds. Guests can also leave a donation on their credit card, write a big fat check or leave lots of cash while dining at Gar Woods, Bar of America, or Caliente this month. 100% of these donations will go directly to sports programs in the Tahoe-Truckee Area.

Gar Woods is an iconic cornerstone restaurant in North Tahoe known for it’s amazing food, drinks and view. Owner Tom Turner believes in giving back to the community that has supported Gar Woods for 28 years. He looks forward to this year’s benefit that will contribute to the well-being of North Lake Tahoe.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — The 62nd Annual North Tahoe Community Awards Dinner was hosted by the North Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association this past Wednesday, April 20th at the Resort at Squaw Creek. Tahoe Restaurant Collection was recognized among other local businesses and organizations for their contributions and dedication to the North Lake Tahoe community.

This year, more than 250 local business owners, community leaders and members were in attendance to join in on the celebration. Tahoe Restaurant Collection was awarded the Large Business of the Year Award for 2014 (since they were not able to attend last year’s award ceremony). Tom Turner was grateful for the honor and delivered an entertaining speech paired with fun banter with the designated emcee for the night, Dave Mulligan of Mad Mulligan Productions. Turner then presented a trophy to the 2015 Large Business of the Year, The Bridgetender Tavern & Grill.
In addition to receiving the 2014 Business of the Year Award, Tom was given an award by The Tahoe Fund who gave a presentation highlighting the ongoing support received by Gar Woods, Riva Grill, Bar of America and Caliente!

Tom and his managers who joined him that evening left the ceremony feeling honored for the recognition received by the North Tahoe Community. They will proudly display their trophies and are honored to be recognized by the North Lake Tahoe Community and the Tahoe Fund.

SnowFest Fun at Gar Woods

3/14/2016

Once again, Gar Woods Grill & Pier hosted a great Tahoe SnowFest Kickoff party with free flowing libations, a delicious spread of appetizers, entrees, and desserts along with live music by Groove Foundry which kept many party goers dancing through the night. All of the proceeds from this party went directly to Tahoe SnowFest as the main fundraiser for 2016! The SnowFest Queen was crowned at this event and everyone seemed to be spreading great vibes with anticipation of a fun SnowFest week ahead.

The Polar Bear Swim took place at Gar Woods only two days later. Ten brave women and fifteen hardy men swam 250 yards on this chilly, windy Saturday afternoon and there were plenty fans to cheer them on from the restaurant, the beach, and even the pier.

Thank you to those of you who came out for the festivities and we look forward to next year's SnowFest and Gar Woods Polar Bear Swim!
