Where: South Lake Tahoe
Chosen By: Michaela Guzy, an American media executive, entrepreneur and on-air show host. She is the executive producer for two online television shows, Michaela’s Map and OhThePeopleYouMeet. Based in New York City, she is also an adjunct professor at New York University School of Professional Studies, where she teaches a course called "Travel Storytelling: Creating Video Content." Why: Did you know that Lake Tahoe is one of the oldest, tallest, largest, deepest and purest lakes in the world? The southern shore of the lake, known as South Tahoe, straddles two states and is known to be the livelier shore. There is a booming craft beer scene, and they even have a beer map for visitors. Some standouts are locally owned Lake Tahoe Ale Worx and the Cold Water Brewery. Not too sure what’s in the water out there, but the southern shores of Lake Tahoe also produces world-renowned athletes. South Tahoe is home to a couple of Winter Olympian Gold Medalists and several 2018 Olympic hopefuls. (Check out my interview with Hannah Tetter, Maddie Bowman and Kyle Smaine, who all train on Sierra, the “locals” mountain.) In October 2017, an 11-foot bronze sculpture by artist, Gareth Curtiss, was unveiled at Champions Plaza called the “Spirit of Competition," inspired by local Olympic athletes. Heavenly is a mountain that's great for families. The resort has a village with shops and outdoor fire pits. Check out dinner and magic show at The Loft, and for the best sunset views (and steaks) in South Tahoe, go to Friday’s Station. Stay at the Lake Tahoe Resort at Heavenly, where rates start at just $109 and its location in the middle of the village means you can walk right to the gondola — nice when lugging skis or a snowboard. But South Tahoe isn’t all about the powder; in fact over two-thirds of tourist arrivals are in the spring and summer months for hiking, biking and golf. Wildlife lovers won't want to miss a visit to meet Emma, an American bald eagle rescued by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care. Courtesy of Steven Munatones, Founder of Openwaterswimming.com, this article features a rather humorous interview with Dr. Jeff Hartman. Hartman is a long-time friend of Gar Woods Grill & Pier who has rallied numerous swimmers for the Annual Gar Woods Polar Bear Swim year after year. We are hoping to see Dr. Hartman return for this year's Polar Bear Swim on Saturday, March 4th, 2017. Thinking about swimming in this year's Polar Bear Swim? This is what Dr. Jeff has to say about participating in this "cool" annual event. Dr. Jeffrey Hartman will participate once again at the 250-yard Gar Woods Grill & Pier Polar Bear Swim in Lake Tahoe. Photo Credit: Jason Wilson Carnelian Bay, CA August 12, 2015 – Home of the “Wet Woody”, Gar Woods Grill & Pier and The Monte Foundation will be hosting their 4th Annual “Fireworks Spectacular” on Sunday, September 4th at 8:30pm. You are invited to sit front row on the action and watch the Labor Day Weekend sky light up just off Gar Woods pier. Many have said this is the best fireworks show they’ve ever seen, so don’t miss out!
The lakefront fireworks show will not only pay homage to the social and economic achievement of workers but will also benefit North Tahoe-Truckee Area Sports Programs. In the last three years this event has raised over $70,000 that went directly to funding local sports programs and they are out to break a record this year. In addition to the money Gar Woods donates from the evening, High School athletes will be selling event T-shirts and glow sticks on the beach that will contribute to the proceeds. Guests can also leave a donation on their credit card, write a big fat check or leave lots of cash while dining at Gar Woods, Bar of America, or Caliente this month. 100% of these donations will go directly to sports programs in the Tahoe-Truckee Area. Gar Woods is an iconic cornerstone restaurant in North Tahoe known for it’s amazing food, drinks and view. Owner Tom Turner believes in giving back to the community that has supported Gar Woods for 28 years. He looks forward to this year’s benefit that will contribute to the well-being of North Lake Tahoe. The Fireworks show is best viewed from Gar Woods Beach. If you plan to dine at Gar Woods Grill & Pier the night of the event we recommend making reservations in advance by calling 530-546-3366. TAHOE CITY, Calif. — The 62nd Annual North Tahoe Community Awards Dinner was hosted by the North Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association this past Wednesday, April 20th at the Resort at Squaw Creek. Tahoe Restaurant Collection was recognized among other local businesses and organizations for their contributions and dedication to the North Lake Tahoe community.
This year, more than 250 local business owners, community leaders and members were in attendance to join in on the celebration. Tahoe Restaurant Collection was awarded the Large Business of the Year Award for 2014 (since they were not able to attend last year’s award ceremony). Tom Turner was grateful for the honor and delivered an entertaining speech paired with fun banter with the designated emcee for the night, Dave Mulligan of Mad Mulligan Productions. Turner then presented a trophy to the 2015 Large Business of the Year, The Bridgetender Tavern & Grill. In addition to receiving the 2014 Business of the Year Award, Tom was given an award by The Tahoe Fund who gave a presentation highlighting the ongoing support received by Gar Woods, Riva Grill, Bar of America and Caliente! Tom and his managers who joined him that evening left the ceremony feeling honored for the recognition received by the North Tahoe Community. They will proudly display their trophies and are honored to be recognized by the North Lake Tahoe Community and the Tahoe Fund. Tahoe finally had a much needed snowy winter but now temperatures are rising and people are soaking up the sun whenever they can. Gar Woods Grill & Pier in Carnelian Bay has seen a large increase in outdoor diners over the past week. Even after last weeks snow storm it is feeling more and more like summer. The days are getting longer and soon we'll start seeing more boats on the lake. Wet Woody Wednesdays will be back soon and Gar Woods is gearing up for another great Summer!
Once again, Gar Woods Grill & Pier hosted a great Tahoe SnowFest Kickoff party with free flowing libations, a delicious spread of appetizers, entrees, and desserts along with live music by Groove Foundry which kept many party goers dancing through the night. All of the proceeds from this party went directly to Tahoe SnowFest as the main fundraiser for 2016! The SnowFest Queen was crowned at this event and everyone seemed to be spreading great vibes with anticipation of a fun SnowFest week ahead.
The Polar Bear Swim took place at Gar Woods only two days later. Ten brave women and fifteen hardy men swam 250 yards on this chilly, windy Saturday afternoon and there were plenty fans to cheer them on from the restaurant, the beach, and even the pier. Thank you to those of you who came out for the festivities and we look forward to next year's SnowFest and Gar Woods Polar Bear Swim!
